Dear Parents and Guardians,
While we made many improvements this past year, I eagerly look forward to this school year to continue our journey towards excellence! Working with you and your child at Covington Street Elementary is a joy. As we strive to make our learning environment more rigorous and relevant your support is vital. Let us all continue on our journey toward excellence with high performance as our goal.
To achieve our goal, we need you! We need you to work with us as a team and communicate openly with each other. A strong link between home and school will serve our children well as we strive for excellence. I invite you to support and participate in the activities that will make ours a school of excellence for your child. This includes supporting our PTA, open houses, and fundraisers. It is also important that you plan time at home for activities and experiences to enrich your child’s academic achievement at home. I ask that you please support your child’s academic success by setting high expectations for completion of homework, reading to and with your child at home, encouraging strong academic performance and attendance, and expecting good citizenship and behavior at school. Most importantly, I ask you to assure that your child attends school regularly, is prompt, and is present for the entire day. From late arrivals and early sign-outs, we lost thousands of hours of instructional time this past year. Extended absences as well as multiple early sign-outs result in poorer student performance and can result in a decision by the principal to retain a student. We need your support as we continue our NO EARLY SIGN-OUT, except for emergencies. This procedure is explained in the handbook.
Please also be aware that we have a new main office at Covington Street! The original front entrance will still be used in the morning from 7:30-8:00am for morning arrival. At 8:00am those doors will be locked for the remainder of the school day and all visitors will enter through the new main office area. Signs will be posted.
Our teachers expect all children to achieve at high levels. We take responsibility for teaching the academic content needed for success but must have your help and support if your child is to see the value of their education. Your children are our primary concern and our decisions will always put children first. Your support is the vehicle that allows our focus to stay on your children while keeping a vision of excellence.
As we strive daily to build our learning-focused educational environment for all of our children, we ask you to be an integral part of this endeavor. I look forward to a productive and successful school year with your support.
